Ok..I watched the videos with the one being alot more clear and less pixelated than the other. What the technical differences between the two? What am I looking at exactly?
I really need to build a PVR for myself and put an HDTV card in there.
the first link is a lower res xvid encod of an hdtv source with vbr mp3 audio
the second link is a higher res xvid encode of an hdtv source with original ac3 audio
the source was from cbs so it's 1080i and the pixellation is from the source (not xvid).
the HD transport stream for those four mins of footage (?) was about 440 MB. so you can see the advantage of compressing into xvid if you want to keep any recorded broadcasts.
you will need large hdd or setup an array if you want to record vasts amounts of HD material.

oh and you better hurry with your decision to build a pvr. i THINK july is when all HD recording hardware will be mandated to support the broadcast flag. So if you want to record anything being broadcasted OTA, now is the time to snag a card.

A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventualy die and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it

I tried mirroring the two files, but the upload to my webserver in Atlanta kept crapping out. I'll try again later.
Last I read the broadcast flag was delayed or not going to be implemented.
Google time!
Files are now mirrored on my site and I went ahead and changed the links in Reg's post above to my site.
John Dvorak commentary: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1814163,00.aspIn a blockbuster announcement May 6, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said that the FCC, acting as a stooge for the MPAA and Hollywood interests, overstepped its bounds by requiring that "broadcast flag" circuitry be included as a mandate in all new digital receivers as of July
