    External uber gigabit network hd?

Ok, so after talking to buddha a while back I've decided what I want to get for myself for my bday which is towards the end of this month. I want a huge external hd that is raid so if a hd dies I won't lose everything. I also want it to have a gigabit connection so I can share files (namely music) between my computers without either machine slowing down. I will also need a gigabit switch. By uber I mean a terrabyte or so of storage which if it was raid would be cut in half. 500 gb of stuff (again namely music) that is external and has the potental to be portable gives me a hard on. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Dlink NAS device...

    HD's...

Not sure if you have a specific type of switch in mind, but for the money this is probablly a good deal and since it Dlink it should match up with the NAS just fine:

my thought is that you really are storing gay porn and not music. why the fuckin eff are you wanting to share among several computers. YOu can only use one computer at a time. Do you have a band? lol

Levi: I already gave you the answer to this question...

    $425 @ NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822111014

I've had one for months and it r0x!

I forgot the brand of gigabit switch I bought, but it doesn't do gigabit speed..maybe because one NIC is dumbing the switch down (which happens on all the cheaper gigabit switches)

BTW: If you read the comments on the Hammer, one guy goes into detail on an error he gets over the network. I too got this error, and tracked it down to a Windows problem when browsing shares using the device's IP addy. Just use the windows netbios/machine name and it'll work great.

    \\192.168.1.100 <-- craps out
    \\n1200 <-- works great!

I did report this issue to Hammer Storage tech support.

roger that buddha. ronin, i havent had much luck with dlink devices. i prefer linksys. linksys has a device i might get. it is wireless N which i dont really need but oh well. the g device doesnt appear to be as robust.

    http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...=4351276789B06

as to why i want to do this. i have a massive mp3 collection as well as assorted other software/games/etc that takes up tons of storage. i have two very high end systems that i switch between and do different things on. right now if im on my machine with no music i listen to it from my mp3 machine. this slows both machines down every time it switches songs and while i have a combined 300+ gb of storage between the two machines i still am running out of room. like i said i have a ton of music and id have more but a hd died a few years back. anyway, an external self sustaining device for music or whatever else would clear up room on my machines and be a cool new toy to have. that linksys router is gigabit capable so it should work. im rather excited about this little venture.

Re: External uber gigabit network hd?

    buddhachu,

so ive been doing some limited reading of the reviews on newegg of other large external network capable hds and a review on anandtech of one and for large files, 500mb to 1gb files they work well but for smaller files, such as audio your seek times are a lot worse. go me and the run on sentence.

anyway, now i am hesitant. should i just throw together a cheap mini server with some hds in a raid config? i dunno. the external solution is certainly easy and less stressful to setup. ie. one you just plug-in and the other you basically build a machine. maybe there is an external hd that is good for music? ill read up some more on the hammer buddha and see if people use it for what i want to do. do you share small files with your hammer buddha? or do you stick large files on it? i plan on using the thing a lot.

Have you been drinking again? Hard to follow your post.

I have a bunch of full-sized cd iso files on the Hammer (650MB each) and a bunch of .vob files around 1GB each from DVD rips. It's a full up "server"...it's running on Linux. I've never had it crap out on me during a transfer or crap out ever for that matter.

I could make a big-ass file like a 4-5GB iso file and then transfer that and see what happens if you'd like.

If you can hold off the purchasing decision a month I'm taking some leave next month...I could make another visit and bring the Hammer Myshare with me so you could run it thru it's paces (and you could transfer a bunch of music over to me ). You got cable TV and internet access back yet?

I believe his concern is for smaller files (i.e. music), not bigger ones. Which is odd, because Artis loves the big ones.

I've had zero problems with the MyShare with all sizes and types of files so far.

That should cover all the bases...

Re: External uber gigabit network hd?

i plan on using this almost exclusively for small files, mp3 size and after doing a little reading some other models are not very good for that sort of thing but work well for larger file sizes, ie. 500mb - 4gb.
