I'm building a new computer. I'm starting from scratch. So, these are the things I've forgotten (since I have been away from computers for a LONG time now).

1) I need to know how to get my drives to be assigned drive letters, so I can install MSDOS.

2) I need to know the file/command to get the computer to recognize the DVD-writer, so that I can then install windows.

That's all for now. If you could let me know, I'd be SO appreciative.

MSDOS? OMG! How long has it been?

Your dvd-writrer (if it's an IDE device) should get recognized by your BIOS automagically. Just go into the BIOS and set your dvd as the boot device with WinXP in the drive and it'll start loading on it's own. When you propted to reboot, remember to go back into the BIOS and set your harddrive as your primary boot device.

You can partition the drive during install. Read these guides:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

If you need a bootdisk sometime in your future, check here:

alright, another question... if I just wanted to make a generic boot disk, that would merely bring me to the a prompt, what would I want to put on it?

generic boot disk = go to format a floppy in windows (rightclick->format" and check the "copy system files". tho there may be some other files you would want, like format.exe, fdisk.exe, that will give you a "generic boot disk"
