haha i have taken over Stuffit's pc...hey ratty said he didnt care how the units are being crunched as long as its being done. and i have to keep artis at bay and those that are using super fast pc's. atm mine is offline and i am losing units so FU all that have the power pc's and the haters cause you didnt ask others to help your units get higher. frankly i dont care if i go forward in the seti ladder as i love the number 13 position...mal thanks for running seti for me...great birthday present. /me hugs mal ;) Now if i can only get stuffit to set it on his pc's here at home and work...lol i got a nice present from him already so i wont push it:D bye for now from sunny anaheim!

I "lost" around 1200 units of production and second place on the team while I was gone to 'bama...and I've lost 0 sleep over it.

Seti will startup after reboots right?

BuddhaMan
04-15-2004, 09:41 AM
Only if you set it up as a service or you have the comp automagically login and then SetiSpy or SetiDriver installed which actually starts the client up.

Here's the directions on howto install/start Seti as a service.

Ok I dl'd the cmd line and driver from the links you guys gave me on 8 machines already. I will hopefully have another 10 or so going by next week. These boxes are idle 24/7 for the most part but could get rebooted here and there. In the driver setup there is the setispy option... are you saying to check that box? I'm confused even after reading that link buddha cuz I thought that was what I had already dl'd. Also these are winxp boxes and it specifically states only 2000/nt. I realize that for the most part xp is simply a shell for 2000pro but I am still unclear about what that site was saying as it pertains to seti and what I have already done. Thanks for your help guys.

just create a shortcut to seti in your start/program files/startup or make it start as a service.

Artis
04-15-2004, 12:52 PM
also in the distributed coputing forum there is a sticky thread to a picture of what your seti should look like when you are finished installing it.

again this is on a bunch of pc's at a workplace... I am hiding it and they may get a reboot now and then. I will figure out how to set it as a service. I thought that's what setispy did.

i dont know. putting a shortcut in the startup brings the setidriver up in a window when the comp is restarted. i havent figured out how to have it start in the background or have it start minimized or whatever.

thats assuming there is no user login. if you require user login putting it in the startup folder will only launch it when the user is logged in for whichever profile you put it in.

I asked about the domain because I think there is a way you can send down apps to launch when the comp comes back up through group policies. Granted it would probablly just be easiest to get it running as a service, but if that doesnt work its something to look into. If i get some free time I will test it out on my network.

run seti stealth with a program called seti hide. this merely runs it hidden but you still need to start it as a service upon boot to run with no user logged in.

rather than calling cd a cheater you guys should look at that dedication and ask yourself "why arent i doing more and why am i not exhausting my resources like that?" kudos to you cd for taking the bull by the horns and getting help. rather than hating you guys should take a look at the dedication and applaud rather than scorn. i say good for you cd and fuck what everyone else thinks, any port in the storm in my book! crunch on!

Mal: Try installing as a service with the instsrv.exe and srvany.exe programs form the resource kit.

sign up with your own account mal! the more the merrier! also i have a queue running at http://ratty.no-ip.org:59999 if you wanna check it out. the reason i didnt give you the info for my queue to put in for the computers you are setting up on is that if you are trying to be stealth and my dsl goes down, i didnt want it popping up saying its trying to get units from a dead server or shit like that! your production is making me nervous and looking at my co-workers pc's with eyes wide open

Fight the urge to break the rules here people. A guy doing the Distributed.net code cracking project I was on for 4 years got busted by his employer and was saddled with a bill for the bandwidth his clients used (he installed without them knowing anf without permission).

Read this from the bottom up:

interesting read buddha! to do that on government computers is really a fucking stupid move. technically the seti staff could disqualify all of your results if you are found to be unauthorized computers without permission. ive never heard of that being done but they can technically do that. anyhow as for the dude caught by the govt in georgia, he should have really been smarter and checked with someone before doing that. to charge him for the bandwidth is rediculous however. no distributed computing project (at least that i know of) uses bandwidth 24/7 on a constant stream that would be worthy of charging a person for using it by the hour. little over the top but punishment justified in my book and a lesson learned.

Artis
04-19-2004, 01:31 PM
fuck the govt. seems like a lot of money for legal fees for nothing to happen. waste of tax payer money.

crom
04-19-2004, 01:39 PM
Yea a lot of businesses are blocking it. It became a big problem at my old company. it was a biotech that did mostly cancer drugs. The program that was running on most was something similar to SETI, except it was the human genome project. A worthy cause, but when you're Q/A'ing servers at night and need to optimize some bandwidth having 3000 PC's running it really chokes things up.
