I am not sure on the prices of the newer cards, but I would think middle of the road card would be the ATI 9800 Pro. Should be rather cheap now.

agreed. I hear too much crappy shit about nvidia I'd have to agree that they are relatively cheap. Still 200 bones but I hear its worth it.

may have to wait for the pro though

I would definatley go with the 6600gt over the 9800pro. True, it is an entry level card, but considering the evolution of the new generation chipset's offered by Nvidia, it is still a step up from the once king of the older gen cards. Just about every review roundup I have seen puts the 6600gt at or above the 9800pro in just about everything they threw at it. I am sure ATI's x700 will compete as well as, if not better than, the 6600, but they only offer it, at least as of right now, in a PCI Express. Sounds like they will be clossing that gap with an AGP release of it in about a month though, so if you are hell bent on ATI, decide on whether or not you want to wait.

If you are going to make an investment in something like this, even if it's not going to be top of the line, there is little sense in investing in older technology, particularly when there is newer technology available for the same price range.

Here is a head to head results list between the 9800pro and the 6600gt...taken from anandtech.com

Across the board, the 6600GT is a better buy than the 9800 Pro. There is no question that the performance is better across the board, and only gets better at higher resolutions. Add to that the fact that the feature set is a year newer, and there really isn't a debate.
