We need a lot more info than that. I'm assuming it's going to be a gaming rig. Most importantly we need to know a budget. Is there anything from your old computer that you will use on the new one? Need more info!

How about visiting the tech forum and posting this question there...

And the answer is "yes", I'm too lazy ATM to move this thread there... :D

You should be able to build a nice one for that. I am sure they will slam you with info now.

i suggest you use the 1400 to buy a plan ticket to dallas...break into czech's place and steal one of his many machines

Wow, $1400 will buy a lot of PC. Just ordered the parts for a top of the line game PC and it was about that price and I'm not using anything from my old PC. I would upgrade the video card as well, they have some really nice 256 meg cards at very nice prices.

If you have your old ATX case/Powersupply you can use, that would free up some cash.

If you are buying a gaming machine, do NOT buy an Intel CPU. Intel does not make good chips when it comes to gaming... They are more of a multitasking office applications kind of chip.

Buy an Athlon 64 4000+, an Asus Motherboard... I wouldnt suggest buying an SLI/PCI Express motherboard if you plan on using your current Graphics Card, Corsair XMS Ram (at least 1 gig of ram) and you are about set. All the rest is the cheap shit.

if you upgrade all of that then you will need a high quality power supply. check the technical forum for recommendations on those. and yes buddha is a thread nazi.

If his powersupply is good enough to power his current PC with a 9800Pro.. it should be good enough to run the setup I suggested without a better powersupply... although it is always a good idea to have a high end powersupply with stable rails.

I like Antec PSupplies.

as 64 4000 cpu will require a hefty amt of power and its always good to get a quality pwr supply.

Processors are taking less and less power nowadays. The lower the nanometer the lower the power consumption/heat output.

The 4000+ is still only .13 nanometer I think, but Ill bet it doesnt take anymore of a powerdraw than say a 1.2 ghz Athlon Thunderbird.

Just a guess.

i think a 1.2 tbird requires like 50something watts and a 64 is closer to 90 which is a fairly large difference. here is a useful calculator if you are interested. http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/

Rambo
05-04-2005, 06:14 PM
hey, ill just buy a better powersupply and leave it at that :dance2: , thanks for all the info guys, helps alot, oh and i was gunna go to dallas and shit but im goin w/ some of my friends to france at the end of june so i wont be able to :(

I don't hate you and the POINT is, there's a tech forum with a few recent threads going over this same info. Now if Joe Blow who doesn't check this forum wants to build a machine, he'll never see this info and people will have to repeat themselves.

:(

Hey! There WAS a time when I knew what I was talking about hehe

The lower the nanometer the less power consumption is supposed to be a general rule. I guess not eh. What the hell was the 1.2 tbird? a .18

If its due to the difference in price, go with the 3800. It wont post the same numbers as a 4000 but it will still scream and it's doubtfull any joe schmoe will notice a difference between the two.

Rambo
05-04-2005, 10:12 PM
k, yea cus its a 200$ difference :\

I have a Hecules Game Theater XP 7.1 soundcard if you want some info on it.

Ronin: that's the one that makes me go Roboto on Vent. I haven't sounded like a robot in a while becuase I started using Vent on my craptop while listening on my speakers on the game rig. This also explains why I can't hear people creeping around as goo as you guys.

Interesting. I have become anti-creative mainly due to their fucking garbage software and empty capability promises. I use the digital output on my s/c to hook up to my h/k reciever and it is SUCH a pain in the ass to get a movie with Dolby Digital or DTS to pass through the card. Every now and then I get lucky and it works, but usually it takes quite a while to figure all the shit out.

On top of that, the EAX environments are pure shit. When I set it up in CoD I get so many loud pops and hitches it doesn't pay to keep it on that level. The supposed imaging it's supposed to simulate is decent, but with all the interferance its just not worth it.

When I get back from Dallas and have some disposable income again, I am going to try that other card, even if I have to vent on my other comp...ill just build a little mux device so I can still use my headphones too.

i actually wonder how many cod players use anything besides the miles 2d sound. i have the same problem as ronin does with the eax. i can hear lots of stuff but i also cant hear my own gun fire in real time. i can hear it like 2 seconds later.
