she promoted objectivism. that is all the help i can get you about her. hope that helps. I do recall liking the book The Fountainhead. I think i read that before i reached high school that is why i know shit when it comes to what the story is about now.:\

krazymop
07-28-2005, 08:33 PM
Actually, this is the first Ayn Rand book I've read. It's one of those books I've always had in the back of my mind to read, and I figured what better time than now since I just finished reading The Fabric of the Cosmos (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0375412883/104-0987201-2610314?v=glance) by Brian Greene. I do like it so far, but since I'm only a few hundred pages into it, I will reserve ultimate judgement for now.

As for Mozzy's question, she is a writer who focuses on her own philospohy called Objectivism. The Fountainhead reflects these thoughts by creating a hero, Howard Roark, who is the embodiment of these values. I copied a summary of the important points from her website:

My philosophy, Objectivism, holds that:

1. Reality exists as an objective absolute—facts are facts, independent of man's feelings, wishes, hopes or fears.
2. Reason (the faculty which identifies and integrates the material provided by man's senses) is man's only means of perceiving reality, his only source of knowledge, his only guide to action, and his basic means of survival.
3. Man—every man—is an end in himself, not the means to the ends of others. He must exist for his own sake, neither sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself. The pursuit of his own rational self-interest and of his own happiness is the highest moral purpose of his life.
4. The ideal political-economic system is laissez-faire capitalism. It is a system where men deal with one another, not as victims and executioners, nor as masters and slaves, but as traders, by free, voluntary exchange to mutual benefit. It is a system where no man may obtain any values from others by resorting to physical force, and no man may initiate the use of physical force against others. The government acts only as a policeman that protects man's rights; it uses physical force only in retaliation and only against those who initiate its use, such as criminals or foreign invaders. In a system of full capitalism, there should be (but, historically, has not yet been) a complete separation of state and economics, in the same way and for the same reasons as the separation of state and church.

Pallidrone

Anthem rocked. It is a hard book to read at first because of her useage of words.

Anthem dealt with a postholocaust society where men had deemed that through their own ignorance and self centered ways is what destroyed the world. Everyone that was born into that society had basically assigned names (Which the main characters name was Equality 7-2521) and the word "I" was nonexsistent. Everyplace where there would be the word "I" was replaced with the word "We". Anything that dealt with self was replaced with a word that dealt with many.

I really enjoy older writers like Ann Rand. They had a certain flair for story telling and they never adhered to formula writing like many today because it was not really about making money. It was about telling a story.

Not sure if I would like her books, more of a scifi/horror reader myself. That sounds a little too deep for me Mop.

krazymop
07-29-2005, 09:46 AM
it is, but it isn't. if you really sit and think about the underlying issues, you can get very deep. but the book is able to be read without delving as deep as those 4 themes i posted. i actually an primarily a sci-fi/horror fan myself.

No Ray Bradbury yet but I'll put him on my list of books to read. Has any one read any Isaac Asimov? Can you list which books of his you really enjoyed?

Vyper
07-29-2005, 08:45 PM
Hmm...used to be a big Asimov fan. Read all the Robot books, the origiinal Foundation books and some of his other work which my brain refuses to remember although I did read both books of his autobiography.

Of the older writers perhaps my favorite is Theodore Sturgeon, who among other things coined Sturgeons Law which states that "90% of everything is crap." Mostly he wrote short stories but also a few novels. He also had a wicked sense of humor and made very bad puns.

I love Ray Bradbury's use of the language. His descriptive prose is astonishing for its detail without being overly wordy like Tolkein. His poetry is as good. I loved the Martian Chronicles and really do not care too much for any of the adaptations that have been done of them. The Illustrated Man is among my favorites and Fahrenheit 451 is a geat cautionary tale.

Andre Norton was a big author for me when I was younger and I read and collected just about everything she has written that was SF or Fantasy. Among other things she was the first SF author to have both black and an American Indian lead characters before such things were remotely popular. She never made a big deal about it but it was there for those with the eyes to see. I'm talking mid 50's here folks. She also changed her name to Andre so that her work would actually be published because there was no such thing as female science fiction authors in the late 40's and 50's when she started writing. Yes by todays standards some of her work is quite dated and now scientifically inaccurate as well but the writing was/is good and the stories engaging.

Currently enjoying Lynn Flewellings Tamir books http://www.sff.net/people/lynn.flewelling/ and have enjoyed her Nightrunner series as well. Now if the third Tamir book would come out I'd be happy. :)

Other authors whose work I like: Mercedes Lackey, Spider Robinson, Bary B. Longyear (whom I've met), C.J. Cherryh (also met), Tara K. Harper, Dave Webber (met as well) and Laurell K. Hamilton. ROFL Can you tell I used to go to SF conventions?

I'm a huge Stephen King fan. I have virtually everything he has written. And I'm still not sure if I liked the ending to the Dark Tower series....

As for other sci-fi authors, I love Arthur C. Clarke and Philip K. Dick. Clarke wrote the 2001: A Space Odyssey series. If you have seen the Kubrik movie verison and felt like you knew less about what it was about after watching it than before, this book is for you. It's an amazing story. I'm also a big fan of Orson Scott Card. The Ender books are incredible. I like the humor of Douglas Adams for the most part, but his books sometimes get boring for me.

My favorite sci-fi tales tend to be the short stories. Most people I know aren't into short stories, but there is just something about the succinctness that i love.

I also read most anything Star Wars. There are some good books out there SW related. Try reading The New Jedi Order series. They are very dark for the SW universe.

I hated the ending to the Dark Tower as well but that's Stephen King. He takes you right to the edge and then pulls the rug right out from under you. The only thing was how many months did we spend reading all the Dark Towers? I have read any SW stuff but thinking of getting into them. Thanks for the ideas guys, I'll write these names down and look for them when I'm in the book store again.

Usually, we try to keep our clothes ON, in the winter.
We usually wear a couple of pairs of long underwear, pants, 2 or 3 sweaters, a parka, 2 pairs of socks, boots, gloves, scarf, tuque, goggles.

Now you're ready to sit on the couch and enjoy your favorite sitcom.

Things get more complicated if you want to go outside.

So what's the lowest temp you seen up there in the great white? We actually saw 9 degrees one year in South Carolina. You would have thought a freaking ice age landed.

The coldest I remember in Montreal is something like -30C (-22F).
Wind-chill factor makes it "feel" like -40.

You KNOW you're alive when it's -30 because there's no way death can be that painful...

Mozartt
08-08-2005, 11:40 AM
WOW!!!! I was assuming 9 was painful. Do people actually go to work when it's -30? You think they would tell you to stay home for the day.

Freako
08-08-2005, 12:47 PM
Hell no!
The cold is not a reason to stay at home.
This is just that much more fun when you're taking the bus.

No, no, there's no valid reason to not go in to work. Even during the ice-storm of 98 we all went to school and work.

For those of you who don't know, an ice storm happens when the temperature is just below freezing point and it starts to rain. (my meteorologist friend could explain it better than me) Long story short, rain hits the ground and freezes. Rain hits your car and freezes. Rain hit the trees, the sidewalk, the whatever and freezes.
Usually, this lasts a couple of days. In 98 it lasted like a week. My car had about 4 inches of ice on it. Trees were devastated by the extra weight on their branches...acres of forrest were lost... Power was out in some areas for weeks. Even on the island, we lost power in certain areas for a LONG time.
Pileups were happening on every single road.
But we all still went to work.

Mozartt
08-08-2005, 02:30 PM
LOL In the south we only have ice storms for a few days but the effects last for weeks. Last year we had trees exploding around my house from all the ice. Talk about being woke up in the middle of the night with no power on. :(
