Since it sounds like Quake 4 is going to play alot like Quake 3, I'll guess that rocket and strafe jumping skills will be necessary to get good at Q4.
Here's two videos I made of Q3. First one shows a simple double rocket jump on one way to get to the railgun on q3dm6. Yes, There's an easier way with a single jump, but I wanted to show you can move laterally beside jumping for height. Second one is made with a mod called "Defrag" and it shows your character's speed in the Q3 world on the screen. Default max speed is nomally 320u, by using the strafe jumping technique, I end up (eventually) getting up to over 1400u...going 4x normal. The way this is handy is you can use it in short bursts to outrun your opponent when playing 1v1 to beat them to the red armor (for example). Strafe jumping can be use in alot of ways once you master it. The second video also shows the widescreen format I'm playing Q3 at and since the Defrag mod is loaded, the demo shows both first and third person views on the screen at the same time. You'll see the speed meter on the left eventually get up to 1400+ and the lights in the hallway move by at a faster clip.

This is the webpage that finally helped me figure out the key combos to do strafe jumping. I don't do it exactly like they say myself (I let go of the forward key once I get going). Hopefully it can help you learn to to strafe jump.
