Since it sounds like Quake 4 is going to play alot like Quake 3, I'll guess that rocket and strafe jumping skills will be necessary to get good at Q4.

Here's two videos I made of Q3. First one shows a simple double rocket jump on one way to get to the railgun on q3dm6. Yes, There's an easier way with a single jump, but I wanted to show you can move laterally beside jumping for height. Second one is made with a mod called "Defrag" and it shows your character's speed in the Q3 world on the screen. Default max speed is nomally 320u, by using the strafe jumping technique, I end up (eventually) getting up to over 1400u...going 4x normal. The way this is handy is you can use it in short bursts to outrun your opponent when playing 1v1 to beat them to the red armor (for example). Strafe jumping can be use in alot of ways once you master it. The second video also shows the widescreen format I'm playing Q3 at and since the Defrag mod is loaded, the demo shows both first and third person views on the screen at the same time. You'll see the speed meter on the left eventually get up to 1400+ and the lights in the hallway move by at a faster clip.

This is the webpage that finally helped me figure out the key combos to do strafe jumping. I don't do it exactly like they say myself (I let go of the forward key once I get going). Hopefully it can help you learn to to strafe jump.

jesus thats a big hallway!!

I dont quite understand how thats considered a double rocket jump...seems more like its just a combo. The approach seems identical to the rocket jumps in SIN (based on the quake engine so chances are good its the same thing)

Ok...whateva...don't get technical on me. It shows two rocket jumps in a row....one vertiaclly, one horizonatally (sorta).

If you'd like to see that hallway yourself...download the quake 3 map 'cos1-beta7b' then load the map and when you spawn go right and thru either the orange or blue portal. The other portal lead to other practice areas for trick jumping and whatnot. It's best to use the Defrag mod if you go into those areas to get the full effect.

link to map: http://www.funender.com/defragmaps/cos1_beta7a.pk3/

Put the .pk3 file in your ..\Quake III Arena\baseq3 folder

Handy console commands:

/sv_cheats 1
/devmap <mapname>
/cg_thirdperson 1
/give battlesuit
/give haste
/give all

If you've never played Quake 3, then shooting a rocket at your feet after jumping is probably weird. But really, it's just a splash damage effect. Any game that pushes you if you shoot a powerful gun too close does the same thing.

Rocket jumps are very easy, regardless of direction. Serious Sam does them. (It's how you get to some specials.)

The easiest way to figure this out is to go into single-player and just stand next to a wall and fire. If it "blows you back" away from the wall you shot, then you can boost your jump with it. If it just makes nice particle effects and decals, you're using the wrong weapon.

Yes, there are degrees of how much damage you do to yourself (you always damage yourself doing a rocket jump), but so long as you hit the spacebar first and then fire when you'll be mid-jump, you're good.

This works in UT as well. I thought everyone knew this stuff. :)

Would you explain how to use the Thompson again Kevin?

Sure. Point at your teammates and pull the trigger.

That's pretty cool. I've always wondered how people do the plasma gun trick. I don't even have Q3 anymore; but I had a great time playing it when I did.

Fadey: Hers' a sweeeeet video that you're sure to enjoy. Others may dig it as well as it shows off some really cool Q3 tricks and it's one of the best produced videos I've ever seen on the internet. (size: 256 MB....but worth it -- running time:10 minutes)

If you think any of the things in the video as bullshit and not possible...the demos used to make the video are included in the download so you can watch them yourself (Q3 needed of course).

The demo shows what you can do with strafe jumping and the rocket and plasma gun "tricks" with strafing to do amazing shit. No, the demos were not recorded with the gravity lower than normal.

I just downloaded the TrickIt-2 video from own-age.com. The peeps from infinite Trajectory do some pretty amazing shit! That takes way too much time for practicing than I have!
