Just get a PS2, that way you can play all the kick ass games for it too :D

But if you're looking for a barebones dvd player, one can never go wrong with Sony products :)

buy an Xbox or PS2 and call it a day........ :) j/k although you should know that in the XBox, you can zoom in...... (specially handy when it comes to porn) :p

But seriously, you first check and see what kind of connections your TV can handle (as well as your Sound System). In other words, no need to buy the best DVD player out there (or one with a lot of high end functions) if your TV and/or Sound System can't take advantage of it.

For instance, My 60" TV has Y-Component & S-Video hookups. My Reciever has Optical cable inputs and DTS decoder. Therefore, I wanted to take advantage of those things and I looked for a DVD player that had these options.

Also some people will tell you about getting a Progressive Scan DVD player....... well before you that, read up on the thing and be sure you really want to spend more money on something most people don't even notice unless you show them the normal interlace DVD image and the progresive scan image side by side and even then, I don't know if it is all that special.

Anyway, here's a web site http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_7_4/dvd-benchmark-part-5-progressive-10-2000.html

well my two cents.

night is partly right if u'r jsut plugin into tv w/ no stereo sound with atleast "Dolby digital 5.1 " (this will more than likely mean u have optical or digital coaxial for audio (DTS is not too important is was going to be the next standard but only a few DVD's use it)

For pict u need component input (y cables) DVD using S-video only gives a marginal improvement over VHS using the S-video cable.

If u are short these features don't bother with DVD till u get better stuff. Also need minimum 27" TV because all DVD's are Wide screen and many can't be streched so u get allot of unused screen. U'll know what i mean just check one out at the store.

progessive scan is a real nice function. some DVD have bad pauses at what they call chapters theis scan smoothes that out .

U get used to pauses there are only a few and usually only one or 2 bad ones.

One last thing REnting DVD's is a pain. people don't respect and care for the rentals so lots of times there are scratches
which causes skips and freezes (very irritaing)

OK Hoser which part was I wrong on? hmm?

And not all DVDs are widescreen...... yes, a great majority of DVDs are, but there are a few that have dual sides and you can choose which type of display you want. You are right that watching DVDs on are big screen TV is better because of the widescreen problem.

You are also correct about the "scrathes" and skipping on the DVD rentals...... but it doesn't happen all the often -- specially of the movie is a new release.

Pan & Scam???

I do like to see the DVD movies in widescreen since I get to see the full picture. When they crop the edges of the movies to fit it in the normal view, sometimes you miss out on important things that may be happening on the sides. Hell sometimes, I've seen movies on regular TV where they have to "shift" the image from left to right to show you something important. Granted, this ins't very frequent, but it does happens from time to time. Big a big screen TV, it doesn't fell like widescreen picture is "small."

IMO, if you are planning to get a DVD, it means that you enjoy watching movies and thusly, a big screen is a must.

I gotta 54" TV...which ain't Big Screen but it'll do. I'll have to crawl around behind it but its running thru my bitchin kickass stereo right now so I'm one step below surround sound (which I'm not going to do right now.) So how bout a model suggestion boyz!

Pan & Scam = silly term used for fullscreen, it's really called Pan & Scan. The scam part comes in because as you said, they crop the image so you don't get to see everything that's meant to be in the picture.

So in short, widescreen > fullscreen :moon:

And sorry Bigus, can't really suggest a model since I use my PS2 for a DVD player on my TV, and my DVD-ROM serves it's purpose on my PC :D

Biggy, go Pioneer. They have the best DVD players on the market and they are fairly priced. DTS ready and they automatically go to wide screen or full depending on the actual DVD you are playing. Their slim line model is freaking amazing! It's only about 2" thick and it's silver. Really cool.
Screw going up to B.C., come to T.O. and I can get you a great price seeing as my wife works there :D

The best DVD players out there are Pioneer's and Toshiba's. I just bought the Toshiba 3650. It has progressive scan for HDTV's, Component hookup, S-Video, and Digital Sound. I'm a DVD board whore and I talk to a lot of guys on the Hardware boards. The Toshiba 3650 is definitely the best for the price over there. It's around 185 at Best Buy.

Wanna check out my DVD's??? http://www.dvdprofiler.com/mycollection.asp?alias=kegrun

i dont know if I am too late to comment on the original product...but I recently bought a 5disc Sony DVD player and I love the damn thing. I went with the 5 disc because I started d/ling and ripping DVD's and making VCD's...which generally you need 2 or sometimes 3 cdroms to burn a full movie with...rather than switching them out I went with the 5 disc so i could load them all at once and no longer have to get up off the couch.
Its got the s-video and optical outputs and I am running it all through my H/K reciever which is DTS ready. I wish too god that more DVD's would encode DTS onto thier movies...I notice a pretty significant difference in sound quality and imaging and my H/K will only decode DTS if it is present. I only have a measly 27" Wega...but the picture quality is great.
I also bought my dad a baseline Sony for X-Mas and for the price you get what you would probablly expect...if all your interested in is a good viewing experience...it doesnt pay to blow $500 for top of the line stuff...any cheap DVD palyer is still better then the best VCR!!

Heres a cpl of pics of my system if anyone is interested in seeing it...the dvd is right under the VCR...kinda hard to make out though(i cant put links directly to the pics I wanted too, stupid tripod, so this is just the page where they are)

Thanks everyone for the input! But the point is now moot, cause my gf bought me one for my bday. Its a Panasonic and has all the features you guys described plus being able to play cdr, cdrw and mp3. I just hooked it up last night and was playing with it. I used the Y cable....should I get S-Video cable? My TV can handle it. I'll have to checkout the stereo to see what inputs it can take. I'm sure this is nowhere near a top of the line system but it was free 4 me!!

Hellish_Night

no..... Y-Component is better than S-Video

get the optical cables for beter sound too
