Maybe I'm just over working my GF3 card. When did you say GF5's are going to be released??? I think you're right about PNY taking over the video card market. CompUSA today had a wall of video cards and most of them were PNY.

moz, mine doesn't crash, and I got a gf2. So its prolly not your card..... I dunno though.

Moz I have a GeForce 3 and there are some issues with the Rev. 4.5 driver drop down to 3.5 and that should be fine

I did take, current running the 29.x drivers but I'm still getting random lockups and freezes in the game. I'm thinking maybe it something with my AMD and maybe if I go back to Intel it may clear up. That's why I thinking of doing the motherboard upgrade in a few days.

well there's your main problem... you're expecting your games to run as well on an intel machine as they will on an AMD machine. :D

quick tip: athlon/nvidia/ddr/audigy is the l33t of gaming rigs. not just cuz of the specific hardware kickass, but compatability with almost all games is perfect. I don't trust anything else on my main rig. :)

I can say that I have built AMD machines for the last 3 years, around 20 last years alone. I do enjoy AMD, and always like to root for the little guy, but I'm also a realist. I don't think that one platform is any better or worse, and believe that performance problems lie in the faults of the chipset manufacturers. AMD's failure to deliver the XP2600 as promised was the deciding factor in building my first Pentium machine in 3 years. The result was a hitchless bulid and rock solid performance with double the 3DMark score of my XP2000/GF3Ti500. Am I swayed to feel that I may become a Pentium man...no. I feel that AMD will pull their head out of their ass in the near future and the increases to 166 fsb, cache growing to 512k and chipsets like nvidia's nForce2 will define them once again as a player in the market. But today Intel wins the Power/Cost battle. The additions of DDR Pentium mainboards has made hopping back and forth a bit easier.

As far a lock-ups go, Daniel Vogel from Epic states in part of the UT2K3 lock-up trouble shooting tips -"VIA chipsets in combination with NVIDIA cards and AMD CPUs seem to be a constant source of trouble."

- look familiar?

i run ut2k3 fine on my machine. 800 mhz amd t-bird, 1 gig pc 133 ram, g4 ti4200 64 meg, windows me.

im going intel next cpu i have because the via chipset licks balls and i hopefully never have to deal with such bullshit ever again!

No probs here ... Athlon 1.33Ghz, Gainward GF3. When I installed UT2k3, the game suggested that I should upgrade my drivers. Shrug, I figured I might as well, so I let the game so that for me. In any event, it plays smooth as silk and I have run into no problems.

Although I did make sure to steer clear of the VIA chipset when I selected my motherboard, an Asus A7M-266 :D

what drivers are those on the ut2k3 cd? it did the same thing for me and i updated mine. i was wondering what set of drivers they are though..... btw, good call to stay away from via!

Thanks guys but it's been two years since my motherboard upgrade and I believe I'll be order my new P4 platform Tuesday morning when I get to work. Thinking of going with a 2.4 P4, ASUS mb and 512 of ddr ram. If that doesn't solve my problem then it's time to format the hard drive. Still wondering when the GF5's are coming out, already found a buyer for my old mb and video card.

gf5's prolly wont be till after the holidays :( -sniff- but i can still hope that they make make it by xmas, that'll be what i tell the fiancée to buy me! :)

FYI, im running a VIA mobo (msi) and have no issues with the game. much as i hate to point blame at EPIC, i would guess that they know people used to know via == bad, and are exploiting that fact. VIA cleaned up their act, and i've seen nothing to disprove that fact. till i see otherwise, ill continue being happy with mine :)

No GF5 until April of next year. Nvidia has a pretty straight forward policy on generational hardware. Which basically states 1 generational upgrade per year. Every 6 months the improvement of current generation. Example GF3 spring, GF3 Ti fall. Currently nVidias plans are to release MX440 and Ti4200 in 8X/AGP 3.0 standard. Clocks and mem are to stay the same. How much performance increase will you see with the new standard about 0%. Current games don't even use near the AGP bandwidth of 4X, it's just a marketing strategy to keep them close to on par with the ATI line. I am an all out nVidia fan, but it looks like ATI will own the hill until next spring when NV30 hits the market. Personally I never thought that nVidia would let that happen. I wouldn't put it past them to pull a rabbit out of their hat around Christmas, but I wouldn't put my money on it either.

Hehe, you beat me to the post Rav. Personally got nothing against VIA either. As a matter of fact, I stayed with them when I built the new Pentium machine. Agreed they have had some bad publicity in the past which may still haunt them today. KT266 wasn't the latest either. The new KT400 are good chipsets, but have been to 4 different independant sites now that state they are out performed by KT333 boards when run with their respectively designed memory. The sites don't explain that there are very few DDR manufacturers out there with true 3.2 Mbs memory with a respectable CL rating. Most run 2.5 or 3. But if you run PC2700 on the board it will outrun the KT333 board. Some review sites fail to indentify this and the boards get a bad reputation. It's not VIA's fault, they are building the board to operate into the future and people give them a bad rap for it. You can't always trust what you read... :(

That's until I get my new GF5 then we be talkin' some phat frame rates!!!!! What kind of FPS are you getting now?

40 FPS with your setup is really good Bernie...you should get out www.newegg.com they have got some really great prices. You never know, you made be able to find a new motherboard and chip for your computer real cheap.

It depends on settings and maps actually. The larger the map the lower the frames. Do you have a request that you want me to run for comparison. I Get around 50 FPS on the big outdoor maps and 75-80 on the indoor maps at 1024x768, 32 bit color, full detail.

Mozartt
10-09-2002, 06:52 AM
No request yet, just wondering what I may get with the new hardware.

tinman i love your fps, i get around 28fps on large out door maps running 1024-768 with max details. i get about 40-55 in doors.

mozart, u might get around 33-40 fps in large outdoor maps with all the good stuff and 1024-786. probably around 60-73 fps indoor.

Mozartt
10-13-2002, 12:32 PM
I'm getting 80 - 90 fps on indoor and 60 - 70 on outdoor maps but I'm still tweaking my setup.

when i minimize 2k3 and then try to restore it sometimes i get lockups . like it just goes to a black screen and never returns to the game. either I press cotrol alt del to shut the game down or sometimes it just crashes completely and i have to restart my comp.

Are you running XP? Sounds like your video card can't handle going from software video mode to D3D video mode.

GRAAAAAA!!
