View Full Version : So sad... computer benchmarks

Last night a buddy of mine and I decided to re-test our machines with the two benchmark utils we really enjoy using... 3dMark2001 SE and Codecreatures. When we first built our machines around the same time, we weren't sure who would come out on top... I'm running an athlon XP 1800+, 512M DDR, GF3 ti500, and regular ol' 7200rpm IDE drives. He meanwhile had a dual-1.7GHz Xeon setup (which we knew the benchmarks would only use one of his CPUs), 512M RDRAM, GF3 ti500, and SCSI ~10000rpm drives. I whooped his ass in both benchmarks, which made me happy.

Now, last night, I overclocked my gf3 and decided to see how it affected things. My 3DMark score went DOWN almost 1200 points, and he beat me by about 600 points. Then in codecreatures, I beat him by about 160 points, coming in around 1290.

So I'm confused why my 3DMark score went down so low. Then my roomate, who just got an Athlon 1.4GHz cpu, 512M DDR (upgrading from SDRAM finally), new mobo, and his GF4 ti4600. My buddy and i were absolutely CRATERED by my roomate, just to show you how much of a difference moving up to a better graphics card matters. With a slightly slower CPU than I have, the same RAM, and the gf4 as opposed to my gf3, his CodeCreatures score hit 2020 compared to my measly 1290. :( Bastard!

Looks like it's time for Ravage to do something better with his machine  Unfortunately, that requires money I don't have. dammit :moon: :( hehe

Rav, got a question about this. I had never used Code Creatures until you suggested it here. I must say it's a nice benching tool. I definetly don't build for a living, but do build 10-20 machines a year for friends and what not. I normally make enough in the course of a year to pay for my annual PC upgrade, so it works for me. I keep info on benchmarks to get an idea about dependencies between CPU, memory and graphics cards. It helps me build performance to cost machines. The question deals with when you talked about the score. Is this in reference to the total frames count? I'm a little confused and just want to know the best way to gauge the marks. Additionally I have a ti4600 coming the beginning of the week ( I'm disappointed with the 9700 pros visual quality) and I want to gauge Code Creatures rendering processor dependency against the 1.4 T-Bird results you posted.

Different drivers? You should be testing using the same drivers.

Nothing for you Bro, You just buy the parts and pay the shipping. ;)

Damn Bernie...that's a deal. Just order the parts on the internet and have them shipped directly to Tinny. Of course I don't think he can preinstall all your porn files for you. :D

Tin, the total score i was referring to is the final number given in the results. I use the all-3-resolutions test and the number i was referencing was the "Official Score" box in the top center of the results dialog box. this img may be broken depending on when you look at it, we're rebuilding the server hopefully today (sunday) but besides that it should work so you can see what I mean. this is the screenshot i took of the last time i ran the test

Ok, got it thx. I was only running one res and that's why I hadn't seen the score. I'll give that a try and see what happens.

I'm sure that the Ti4600 isn't going to score like the 9700, but we'll see how close it comes. Here's the reference.

Berine, I do all my online shopping at Newegg (http://www.newegg.com). If you want, tell me what you have to work with for a price range(and don't say cheap, I need a dollar figure) and I'll recomend what I think is the best power balance for your $.

Herren, are you asking where the marks came from? They are out of code creature, if you d/l and install it, it should at a minimum add a shortcut to your program menu.

Well, I just bumped up to an Athlon XP 2100+ and a GF4Ti4200 ... this brought my CC score up to a mere 1637 and brought my 3DMark2001 score up over 6800. Not quite what I was hoping ...

Are you guys finding better performance under Windows XP?
